After the signature had been duly set down, and the signer had read his message with knit brows, the urchin lingered, big with news.
âSay, heard about the body on the beach?â
Kent turned quickly, to see Sedgwickâs face. It was interested, but unmoved as he replied:
âNo. Where was it found?â
âLonesome Cove. Woman. Dressed swell. Washed up on a grating last night or this morning.â
âItâs curious how they all come in here, isnât it?â said the artist to Kent. âThis is the third this summer.â
âAnd itâs a corkerino!â said the boy. âSheriffâs on the case. Body was all chained up, they say.â
âIâm sure they need you at the office to help circulate the news, my son,â said Kent. âAnd Iâll bet you this quarter, payable in advance, that you canât get back in half an hour on your wheel.â
With a grin the boy took the coin. âI got yer,â he said, and was off.
